Chicken wings are a bit of a conundrum to me. Wings keep going up and up in price in the restaurants, but they are so cheap to buy and make at home. I recently spent $5 on a three pound package of wings at the grocery. If I had bought that many wings at a restaurant, it would have cost a small fortune. And don’t get me wrong, sometimes buying them at a restaurant is worth it. Sometimes the wings are delicious (and a decent size). But sometimes it’s not worth it. So if I can make delicious wings at home, like these Crispy Baked Chicken Wings, where I’m guaranteed satisfaction- you bet your butt I’m going to make them at home.
This Crispy Baked Chicken Wing recipe is a super simple, general recipe. It’s the best way to cook crispy chicken wings without having to fry them or without having to do 28 batches in an air-fryer. The key to baking wings in an oven is to bake them on a rack inside a baking sheet. You want the air flow on both sides of the wings to crisp them up. And then all that there is left to do is to toss the wings in your favorite wing sauce and call it a day. It’s that simple!
Let me show you how I made these Crispy Baked Chicken Wings 👇🏻
For this recipe, I used 3 Lbs of chicken wings. This can easily be halved or even doubled. As you can see, my wings were NOT broken down into drums and flats. You can leave them as is (a whole wing) or you can break them down yourself. Nine times out of ten, I choose to break them down.
Breaking down wings.
First, I use a paper towel to pat all of the wings dry. And then you simply twist the wing until it pops. Then use a cleaver to cut (or chop) the wing at the drum and the flat. Discard the end. It might look like a bit of a hot mess, but the wings will look a lot better once they’re cooked.
Seasoning the wings.
As you’re breaking down the wings, throw the ones that are done into a large bowl. Add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, and 2 tbsp olive oil. Give the wings a good toss to coat in the spices.
Cooking the wings.
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, place a baking rack into the sheet pan, and spray the rack down with non-stick spray.
Lay the wings out onto the rack. I place them upside down. You’ll flip them halfway through, so they’ll end on the “prettier” side. Spread the wings out as much as you can. If you have to use 2 baking trays, go for it, because the wings will need some space to crisp up.
Bake for 25 minutes. The wings will look a little golden around the edges, but definitely nowhere near done. Give those suckers a flip.
Cook for another 20-30 minutes. I usually go more towards the 30 mark because we like them really crispy. This is what they’ll look like when they’re nice and crispy 👇🏻
Remove the wings to a large bowl and add about 1/3 cup of wing sauce. Any wing sauce. BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce, whatever you want. We used buffalo sauce here.
Give the wings a good toss to coat in the sauce and then serve some extra sauce on the side.
Serve them right away. They’re best when right out of the oven.
Enjoy!!
