Have you ever tried making a homemade fruit sauce or jam? It’s seriously the easiest and most satisfying thing that you can do. That may be a slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean. It takes about 10 minutes to make this strawberry sauce and it is waaaaay more delicious than anything that you could buy in a grocery store. I’ve gotten to the point where when something is as simple as this strawberry sauce is to make at home- I’m going to just make it at home. It’s so nice to know that you have made something fresh, have seen it from start to finish and you know everything that is in it.
So did I mention how delicious this strawberry sauce is?! I call it a sauce because it is slightly looser than a jam would be. You could easily add more cornstarch and make it into a jam if you would prefer, but I would be perfectly content to smear this sauce all over a piece of toast or English muffin any day. This sauce is so versatile and could be used as a condiment for so many things. Some of my favorite ways to use this sauce is on toast (like I mentioned before), on top of ice cream, drizzled over waffles, pancakes or French toast…. AND for my Shortcut Cheese Danishes. Here they are 👇🏻

Don’t get me wrong, I love a plain cheese danish, but why have a plain one when you can have one smothered in Homemade Strawberry Sauce?
So let’s make this strawberry sauce. Start by making a cornstarch slurry. Combine 1 tbsp of cornstarch with 1 tbsp of water. Mix it well and set aside.
Grab a saucepan and add the strawberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla and water. Give it a light stir to make sure that everything is mixed.
Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower the heat to medium and let it gently simmer. After a few minutes, the strawberries will begin to break down and release their juices. Mash them up a little bit with a wooden spoon to get a good consistency.
Now add the cornstarch slurry and stir constantly until the sauce has thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat. At this point, you could leave the sauce the way that it is- a little chunkier. Personally, I prefer the smoother sauce both aesthetically and texturally.
So simply pour your sauce into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. **Be careful putting hot sauces in blenders or processors, let it cool slightly before attempting**. You could also run the sauce through a mesh strainer if you’d prefer not to have the strawberry seeds, but I don’t mind them and I think they look cute. 😉 Here’s your final product 👇🏻

- In a saucepan, combine the strawberries, 1/3 cup water, granulated sugar, vanilla, orange zest and orange juice. Stir together and bring to a boil.
- Lower heat to medium and heat over a simmer until the strawberries begin to break down slightly and release their juices, about 5 minutes.
- After the strawberries have begun breaking down, add the cornstarch slurry and stir constantly until the strawberry sauce is thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
- You can leave the sauce at this consistency, but I prefer a more smooth sauce. After the sauce has cooled slightly, pour it into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Additionally, you could also run through a mesh strainer to get rid of strawberry seeds (I don’t usually do this step).
- Store in a sealed container or jar for up to one week in the refrigerator.
