Tacos are always in the dinner rotation in our household. It’s one of the few dishes that everyone loves and that everyone will agree on. Not to mention that they are fast. And easy. Did I mention delicious? Tacos are also so fricking delicious. They’re especially delicious when you make your tacos with this Deliciously Simple Taco Beef.
Make your own seasoning. It’s simpler than you think.
Taco seasoning is one of the easiest things that you can make. And for the most part, you probably have all of the ingredients in your pantry already. These days, if something is easy, fast and more beneficial (health-wise) to make from scratch, you better believe that that’s the route that I’m taking. If you take a look at a taco seasoning packet, you’ll find waaaay more ingredients than necessary. Also, the sodium in taco seasoning packets is ridiculous.
I know that making your own taco seasoning at home won’t save you a lot of money (as they are typically less than a buck a piece), but I can tell you that it will be tastier and be a lot healthier.
Let me show you how I made this Deliciously Simple Taco Beef 👇🏻
Start by adding 1 tsp olive oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 lbs ground beef (use 80-20 or 90-10) and cook until no longer pink, breaking it up as it cooks. If there is a lot of fat in the skillet, drain some of it off. A little left behind will give the meat more flavor- shoot for about 1 tbsp left behind.
When the meat is no longer pink, add all of the other players to the game. Add 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1 1/2 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp dried oregano, 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper, one bay leaf, 1 cup tomato sauce, and 1 cup water.
Give it a good stir and let it come to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook to let the flavors meld together.
Let the meat cook on low (at a gentle simmer) for about 20 minutes until the liquid has cooked down and the sauce has thickened. It will look like this 👇🏻
When the meat is done, do with it what you will. 😉 Personally, I enjoy this just as a simple hard shell taco with freshly shredded cheese and lettuce. But sometimes, I like mixing it up by doing soft shell tacos, tostadas, taco salads, taco pizza. Mix up your toppings- cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, diced tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, guacamole… the options are endless.
Enjoy!
