I never used to make my own jam. I guess that it never really occurred to me. Little did I know how much I was missing out. First, it’s a great way to use up berries that are about to go bad. In fact, most berries are sweeter when they’re slightly overripe. Second, holy smokes fresh homemade jam is delicious. And third, it’s incredibly easy. And quick. You’re only ever about 15 minutes away from a fresh, homemade jam. And this Easy Berry Chia Jam is my new favorite thing.
As I mentioned above, jam is one of the easiest things to make. And it seems like I always have berries that I am on the verge of throwing out. Honestly, though, I made this jam with berries that I had just bought at the grocery because I love me some jam.
Confession: I’m not a huge fan of maple syrup. I’ll put a little on my pancakes or waffles, but I prefer jam or a fresh berry syrup.
So when I plan on making big breakfasts for the fam, I usually make myself some fresh jam as well. I love it on waffles, pancakes, English muffins, in my pb&j. I even make homemade peanut butter cups that I stick a little berry jam in as well. It’s fantastic.
Let me show you how I made this Easy Berry Chia Jam 👇🏻
Start by putting 3 cups of fresh berries in a sauce pot. You could use any berries. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, whatever. You could even do a mix of berries. For the jam pictured here, I used all strawberries.
Also to the pot, add 3 tbsp of water, 4 tbsp of pure maple syrup, and 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice. Stir everything around in the pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
Then lower the heat to medium-low and leave it at a low simmer for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the berries should be breaking down. Depending on what berries that you use, you may want to mash them up a bit more. How chunky you like your jam will also depend on preference. I prefer mine more smooth.
Now add 1 tsp pure vanilla extract and 1 tbsp chia seeds.
Reduce the heat to low and cook for another 3-5 minutes to let the chia seeds thicken the jam. Remove from heat. Allow the jam to cool for a few minutes in the pot before removing. The jam will thicken upon sitting.
Store the jam in an air-tight container or jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Enjoy!
