French toast is my favorite breakfast food. Whenever I try a new breakfast restaurant, I will always order the French toast. Whether or not a restaurant can execute a good French toast is a pretty good indicator to me if it’s worth coming back again. But it’s also important to be able to execute a good French toast at home as well. Just like their mom, my kiddos love it as well. Especially this Classic French Toast.
One of the first decisions that you will have to make with French toast is what bread you will use. My favorite breads for French toast are challah and brioche (this is a brioche pictured). But I have had all kinds of fantastic French toasts on all kinds of different breads. I have even had French toast made with zucchini and banana bread. Whatever bread you choose, you want to keep one thing in mind- don’t use fresh bread. Fresh bread will result in soggy French toast. Day old bread is ideal. If you’re using an unsliced loaf of bread, you may even want to slice it ahead of time (if you can).
Decisions, decisions…
The other decision that you will have to make is- what are you going to top your French toast with? My family enjoys the classic butter, confectioner’s sugar, and maple syrup combination. Me, personally, I’m not a huge fan of maple syrup, so I like to top mine with fresh fruit or a homemade jam. One of my favorite toppings is my Easy Berry Chia Jam 👇🏻
I like to cook my Classic French Toast in butter because I mean, well, come on… do I really need to explain? It gives the French toast so much flavor and such a delicious golden crust. I would recommend using 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (or ghee) for each batch of French toast. This recipe’s batter makes about 15 slices of French toast and I could fit 3 slices of bread in my skillet- so that was a total of 5 tablespoons of butter.
You can refrigerate or even freeze leftovers for later. Simply reheat in a skillet, in the microwave, or in the oven at 350 degrees.
Enjoy!
These are the recommended products that I used to make this delicious recipe! These are not only products that I use, but products that I love.
Classic French Toast
Ingredients
- 15 Slices Bread
- 8 Large Eggs
- 3/4 Cup Milk (any milk you like)
- 1/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar, packed
- 1 Tbsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 Tsp Ground Nutmeg
- Pinch of Salt
- Unsalted Butter for Cooking French Toast (1 tbsp per each batch, about 4-5 tbsp)
- For Topping: Confectioner’s Sugar, Maple Syrup, Berry Chia Jam (see recipe link)
Instructions
- In a large, flat bowl, add the 8 eggs and whisk really well. Add the milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Whisk really well until the brown sugar is dissolved and all of the ingredients are well mixed.
- To cook: melt 1 tbsp of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Submerge a slice of bread into the batter and shake off excess. Add it to the skillet and repeat 2 more times (or however many slices your skillet can hold).
- Cook the French toast about 2 minutes per side until golden brown. Flip and cook about another 2 minutes until golden brown. Remove to a plate or a casserole dish and cover with a clean, dry towel.
- Add another tbsp of butter to the skillet and melt. Then dip more bread in the batter and repeat steps above. Batter should make about 15 slices.
- To serve: top with butter, confectioner’s sugar, maple syrup or berry chia jam. Enjoy!
